I'm a member of the church, and I'm very happy to have the gospel in my life. The person I love a lot will soon go on a mission. I have two questions. How long will it take for them to send a letter back with his departure date? Should we break up now, or can we continue to be boyfriend and girlfriend? Is there any problem with that? Thanks.

Hi friend. It usually takes a few months for the response to come. It's hard to decide whether or not to break up with your missionary boyfriend. Having a girlfriend back home can be a wonderful support for a missionary. On the other hand, it is also very distracting when a girlfriend breaks up with her missionary boyfriend while he is on his mission. You'll have to decide for yourselves what is best. Good luck!

There's a far better way to learn about Mormons! If you have questions, consider inviting Mormons that live in your area to visit with you in your home!

I just had a former boyfriend return home from a mission one month ago. We are now dating again and having a lot of fun strengthening our relationship and getting to know each other better. We decided to break things off before he left on his mission and I am grateful that we did. I was able to freely date other guys and learn new things about myself in the dating world. At times I felt that I was betraying my friend on a mission but then he would reassure me that I was doing the right thing and that he did not expect me to lock myself up for two years. I tried to speak very little of the guys I dated when I wrote him letters. When he returned I encouraged him to take other girls out and then decide if he wanted to date me exclusively. Not everyone's experience turns out this well but I believe it is a good formula to follow. Also the letters take from 3 days to 2 weeks on average depending on how far away he was sent.
