Scripture-Study List: The Book of Mormon

Mormons believe that when Christ spoke of “other sheep” not of the Israelite fold, He was referring to those of the western-hemisphere civilization that produced the Book of Mormon. After His resurrection and ascension, Christ visited His people on the American continent, as He promised He would in the New Testament.

John 10:14-16:

  • I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.
  • As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.
  • And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.

Mormons believe that the words of prophets on the American continent, contained in the Book of Mormon, serve as a second witness of Christ, in addition to the words of the biblical prophets.

2 Corinthians 13:1:

  • This is the third time I am coming to you. In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established.

After describing the great apostasy, the Old-Testament prophet Isaiah prophesied of a sealed book that would be brought to one who is learned. The learned would not be able to read it, so the book would be delivered to one who was not learned. This prophesy was fulfilled in the 19th century. After the apostasy, God brought to light the Book of Mormon, a book that was delivered to the unlearned boy-prophet Joseph because the intellectuals of the time were too influenced by the “precept of man.”

Isaiah 29:11-12:

  • And the vision of all is become unto you as the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one that is learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I cannot; for it is sealed:
  • And the book is delivered to him that is not learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I am not learned.

Some conjecture that the Old-Testament prophet Ezekiel foresaw the coming forth of the Book of Mormon. The “stick,” or record, of Judah is the Bible. The stick of Ephraim may refer to the Book of Mormon, written by those of the descendents of Joseph that were led by God to the American continent.

Ezekiel 37:15-17:

  • The word of the LORD came again unto me, saying, Moreover, thou son of man, take thee one stick, and write upon it, For Judah, and for the children of Israel his companions: then take another stick, and write upon it, For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim and for all the house of Israel his companions:
  • And join them one to another into one stick; and they shall become one in thine hand.
