Scripture-Study List: The Day of Judgment

Jesus taught that He would return to judge men at the last day according to their works, and, presumably, according to their faith.

Matthew 16:27:

  • For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.

Jesus taught the same principle elsewhere: He will judge men according to their works (and, presumably, their faith) at the last day.

Matthew 25:31-46:

  • When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory:
  • And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats:
  • And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.
  • Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:
  • For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:
  • Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.
  • Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?
  • When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?
  • Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?
  • And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
  • Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
  • For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:
  • I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.
  • Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?
  • Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.
  • And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

The apostle John also taught that the Father chose Christ to judge men and women at the last day.

John 5:22:

  • For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:

John foresaw the day of judgment in his apocalyptic revelation. All will be judged according to their works and, presumably, their faith.

Revelation 20:12:

  • And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

The apostle Paul also taught that God would judge the world through His Son Jesus Christ at the last day.

Acts 17:31:

  • Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

Paul spoke of a final day of judgment elsewhere as well. He also taught the Romans that men would be judged based on their works (deeds) and obedience.

Romans 2:3-8:

  • And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God?
  • Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?
  • But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;
  • Who will render to every man according to his deeds:
  • To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:
  • But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,

Paul also taught the Romans that all would stand before Christ’s judgment seat.

Romans 14:10:

  • But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.

Paul taught the same principle to the Corinthians: men and women will be judged based on their works (deeds) and, presumably, their faith, before Christ’s judgment seat at the last day.

2 Corinthians 5:10:

  • For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.
