LDS and Voted Against Prop 8

by Anonymous

I am LDS, went on my mission, married my high school sweetheart and was sealed for time and all eternity in the Washington DC temple. I voted against prop 8 because I didn't think it was right for Americans to vote on changing the constitution of the U.S. Nor did I think it was right that the Roman Catholic and Utah LDS churches tell their members in California how to vote. It was my decision and my vote, I listen to what they said, and voted against it. I told my bishop about my position and although he encouraged me to take another long look at it, he said I had free will and to be guided by the spirit of truth.

Webmaster: Can't say I agree with this fellow's position. Prop 8 was to change California's constitution, for example, not the U.S. constitution, and churches are well within their constitutional rights to encourage their members to vote on important moral issues. However, there have been accusations that the LDS Church "forced" it's members to support Prop 8. This brother's statement clearly disproves that sort of conspiracy-theory mentality.

I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to follow the counsel of our prophet to let my voice be heard on these issues. My husband and I were among the saints in California who went door-to-door to speak with people about protecting the sacred institution of marriage. I am also very thankful for the inspired Proclamation on the Family. This document instructs us with great clarity about our God-ordained roles as men and women. It is like a shining beacon in a world of darkness. There is an urgent need for the members of the church in these latter-days to be a light for those who are confused about the sacred institution of marriage and the eternal nature of gender. As members of Christ's church, we have an obligation to let our voices be heard on these critical issues in a spirit of truth and love.
