The concept of a united family that lives and progresses forever is at the core of Latter-day Saint doctrine.
Interesting question. The church does not tell its members how many children they should have, and birth control is not prohibited. Plenty of Mormon families don't have many kids. Some don't have children at all. But it is true that we place high value on the family, as do many other religious communities. Maybe that has something to do with why so many Mormon families are larger.
