by Francisco Rubio -

Joseph Wafula Sitati was recently called to be the first Mormon General Authority from Sub-Saharan Africa! Elder Sitati was called to serve in the First Quorum of the Seventy.

Elder Sitati is from Kenya. He joined the church in 1986 and became the first Kenyan District President in 1989. In 1991, Joseph and his wife, Gladys Nangoni, were the first Kenyan couple to be sealed as a family, an important Mormon ordinance. In 2001, Elder Sitati became the first Kenyan Stake President. He became an area seventy in 2004, and president of the Nigeria Calabar Mission in 2007. He has many years of experience as a leader in the Church!

The Church is growing rapidly in Africa. There are currently over a quarter of a million members.
