About 15 years ago my dead girlfriend got pregnant and had an abortion. I’ve been inactive for about 20 years and I’m wanting to go back to the church and eventually go to the temple and Mary and be sealed to my current girlfriend. And scared that I will get excommunicated for my girlfriend having an abortion years ago. I have an appointment to speak with my Bishop friday. Can anybody tell me if I should expect to be excommunicated or if I would ever be able to go to the temple? Thank you

Members of the Church believe that marriages performed in temples are sealed, or blessed to last for eternity.
It's excellent that you want to come back to the church and eventually be sealed! It takes courage to return to the church after years of inactivity. Welcome back!

Repenting of your past sins is an important step for someone who hopes to recover their spirituality as you do. The specific steps required for your repentance will depend on the revelation the bishop receives on your behalf. It's impossible to say what specific steps will be needed.

Even if excommunication is required, though, it's not the same thing as being "kicked out of the church." It's just something that's important in some cases, so the sinner can start over as a "new" member of the church. Many people who have been excommunicated and then rebaptized are grateful for the experience.

Regardless of what lies ahead on your spiritual journey, I'm excited you're taking these important steps. The sealing ordinance will be a great blessing in your life!

I hope this answer helps. Let us know how it goes!
