What exactly is so sinful about masturbation? I understand that it is an inherently sexual act, but it’s still rather personal. How could it be so frowned upon? I hope this doesn’t come across as rude!

Hi friend. God determines what is right and wrong, not us. He has revealed through modern-day prophets that these kinds of sexual experiences are best reserved for marriage.
We can speculate on the reasons of course. Masturbation is frequently associated with pornography use, which inappropriately objectifies people who ought to be respected as children of God. It can reinforce natural desires that might lead to other sexual sins if not kept in check. It arguably reduces the drive to marry and start a family. Etc., etc., etc.
But in the end, all this would just be speculation. God doesn't need to explain Himself.
It's important to point out, too, that through the atonement of Jesus Christ, people can recover from their sins. It's a mistake to talk about sin without also emphasizing the redemption that comes through Jesus.
